For screenwriter Linda Woolverton, Alice Through the Looking Glass is a classic girl power tale. 

The sequel to the blockbuster Alice in Wonderland (which Woolverton also wrote) tosses Alice back into adventure, exploring the world as a sea captainWell, until she gets beckoned back to Wonderland — this time to save a sad Mad Hatter and help him find his family.

Making Alice a sea captain in that particular Victorian era was an essential piece of creating a well-rounded female protagonist, Woolverton tells Mashable
